Minnesota Wineries

In Minnesota, summer is just long enough to forget our long winters. Around the fourth of July, amnesia has fully set in for many Minnesotans. Balmy nights, outdoor-baseball and air-conditioning bills make winter a distant memory. Minnesota wineries seem like a no-brainer.

As bleak as this photo may seem, by 2008 Minnesota had 32 wineries that produce a variety of award winning wines.

According to a 2008 Minnesota Grape Growers Association report, Minnesota has 632 vineyards. The vineyards range in size form two vines to 10,000 vines, with average 929 vines per vineyard.

An Explosion of New Wineries

Prior to 1990, less than 20 vineyards existed in Minnesota. The seminal moment in the explosion in the numbers of wineries can be traced to the introduction of the hardy Frontenac grape. The University of Minnesota's Frontenac grape (1996) ushered in a new era in Minnesota wine making. The University of Minnesota's wine grape program is heralded as one of America's best.

La Crescent

In 2002, the University released its La Crescent grape. It is considered their best white wine grape. The grape produces wines like the Germanic Reislings. The extremely hardy grape -it survives down to -34 degrees Farenheit - is highly productive and is an excellent dessert wine.

Frontenac gris

The third great University grape developed was the Frontenac gris. It is a cousin to the Frontenac grape that originated as a bud mutation. The amber colored juice yielded by the grape produces an excellent dessert or ice wine.

Marquette

The Marquette grape is considered the most important cold weather grape introduced since the Frontenac. The grape is a virticultural gem. It is hardy, productive and rot resistant. The wine has pronounced tannins, ruby color and hints of cherry. The demand for the Marquette is extremely high. If you want them, plan ahead.
